The Nakashima family bought the corner lot on Effie Street in 1971. Three generations later, the original 1920s bungalow, the 1980s back-house Mrs. Nakashima designed herself, and the converted garage studio her grandson built in 2019 form a three-building compound that anchors the family's history.
When the youngest grandchildren — twins, now 14 — started pushing to host friends at the compound every weekend, Mrs. Nakashima (now 84) gently suggested a different idea: "Let other families make their memories here too. Between ours."
The management plan we built runs all three buildings as connected-but-independent listings. The family can block any combination for their own use — one building, two, or the whole compound. The rest books out.
The main house, because of its size and historic register status, draws Disney-adjacent family groups and film location scouts. The back-house is the highest-demand listing in our Silver Lake portfolio — a 2-bedroom that consistently books at $420 a night. The garage studio brings long-stay tech workers on short LA deployments.
In 2025, the compound as a whole earned $168,000 gross. The family used it collectively for 38 nights — the twins' birthday parties, a 50th wedding anniversary, two Thanksgivings, and Mrs. Nakashima's private August.
What Mrs. Nakashima told us in a thank-you card after Christmas: "We still own this family. The house just has more guests now."
