MBA: Mortgage Applications Fall 5.3% as Surveyed Rates Ease
The GnG Vacation Take
Use the weekly survey as a prompt to refresh financing assumptions, then anchor the property's plan in its documented terms.

MBA reported on October 21, 2026 that mortgage application volume fell 5.3% from the previous week on a seasonally adjusted basis in the week ending October 16, 2026. Its seasonally adjusted Purchase Index declined 7%.

The same survey's average contract rate for conforming 30-year fixed mortgages eased to 7.41% from 7.50%. For loans at an 80% loan-to-value ratio, points were 0.75, including the origination fee.

What the figures cover

The survey tracks U.S. closed-end residential mortgage applications through retail and consumer-direct channels. Applications are an early financing step; completed sales and a property's rental income require separate evidence. This weekly release cannot establish Southern California rent changes or a particular borrower's available rate.

A practical financing check

  • Confirm the quote date, loan amount and product with the lender.
  • Review points, lender charges, total monthly payment and rate-lock status on the written offer. The CFPB's Loan Estimate explainer identifies these fields.
  • Build the property's acquisition and rental budget from its own financing terms, lease terms and operating costs.
