NAR: September Pending Home Sales Fall 7.3% Month over Month
The GnG Vacation Take
Follow contract activity as a market signal, and use verified transaction milestones to plan the home's rental calendar.

U.S. pending home sales fell 7.3% month over month and 11.3% year over year in September 2026, according to NAR's October 20, 2026 release.

A sale is pending once the contract is signed and before the transaction closes. The index tracks contract activity for existing single-family homes, condos and co-ops. Closings usually follow within one or two months; financing, inspection or appraisal issues can change the timing.

For an owner buying or selling a home, the practical question is where the specific transaction stands and when the property will be available for its next use.

Three checks for the property calendar

  • Record milestones: Keep the signing date, target closing date and current transaction stage together.
  • Confirm next steps: Check financing, inspection and appraisal progress with the transaction team.
  • Align availability: Coordinate advertised availability with confirmed handover arrangements and any preparation work.
