September CPI Shelter Rises 0.4%: A Rental Data Check
The GnG Vacation Take
Use CPI to understand the price backdrop, then ground the rental plan in the property's local comparisons and actual costs.

On October 14, 2026, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the September CPI shelter index rose 0.4% from August. The index for rent of primary residence increased 0.2%, while owners' equivalent rent rose 0.3%. All three monthly changes are seasonally adjusted.

Know what the measure covers

Shelter tracks housing services and includes rent, owners' equivalent rent, lodging away from home and other items. BLS uses rental observations for both rent and owners' equivalent rent and revisits each sampled unit every six months. Most rents in the sample are continuing rents.

That makes the release useful context for housing-service prices. A decision about a particular home's new asking rent needs current local evidence about comparable properties and lease terms.

  • Compare like with like: Match location, condition, furnishing and intended lease length when reviewing local rentals.
  • Track separate measures: Keep proposed asking rents and income from existing leases in separate columns.
  • Check actual costs: Refresh the property's bills and service quotes before revising the operating budget.
