Fire Prevention Week begins today, October 4, and runs through October 10, 2026. NFPA's campaign, “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower,” focuses on charging lithium-ion devices safely. The National Park Service confirms the dates and theme.
For rental owners, this is a practical prompt to review the devices and chargers supplied with the home and the instructions guests receive. Prioritize the equipment provided with the home and keep its charging instructions easy to find.
Before the next arrival
- Use the manufacturer's charger or one it approves. The U.S. Fire Administration advises plugging charging equipment directly into an outlet, without extension cords or multiplug adapters.
- Charge on a hard, flat surface, stay nearby, and disconnect when fully charged, following NPS guidance.
- Stop using a battery with excessive heat, swelling, unusual odors, or leaks. Flag affected equipment for qualified follow-up rather than returning it to guest use.
Keep the charging area clear and include a short, readable reminder in the guest guide. Record equipment removed from service and its follow-up status in turnover notes.
